Droid Bionic Outed: OMAP 4430 Reigns

When the hype machine for a product hits a certain decibel, you can expect some legitimate news to come rolling in. And so it is, after covering the leaked Chinese Bionic cousin and touching on the Bionic's specs state of flux we now have confirmation courtesy of the Motorola Developer's site. What started out as just another Tegra 2 device has ditched NVIDIA's somewhat aging SoC for TI's latest, the OMAP 4430. And paired to that SoC's SGX 540 GPU is the expected 4.3" qHD screen, likely the same Pentile RGBW panel we've seen on the Droid X2. So, we're familiar with the SoC from the Droid 3, the panel from the X2 and the speeds from VZW's other LTE devices, likely from the same MDM9600 baseband we saw in the Thunderbolt. So what's left to find out? Battery life is our big concern right now, and the device's styling remains a mystery. Stay tuned, we should see an official announcement any day now.

The GPU in the OMAP 4430 is a year old and the same one as in the original Galaxy S from mid-2009. TI needs to get with the times and use more modern GPUs in its SoC designs. The iPhone 5 is likely to have the same GPU as the iPad 2 (SGX 543MP2) making it a significant upgrade compared to what is currently out there.Alexvrb - Tuesday, August 2, 2011 - link
You do realize it is possible that clockspeed is way different, right? Just because it uses the same GPU core doesn't mean performance will be identical. OMAP 4430 has the SGX540 clocked at 304Mhz - about 50% higher than the 200Mhz SGX 540 in the Galaxy S. The OMAP 4440 and 4470 have it clocked at 384Mhz - nearly DOUBLE the speed of the "same chip" in the Galaxy S.Educate yourself a bit before you spout nonsense. They might not even be built on the same process node.

Oh how insightful. In this age of new SoCs emerging frequently Dagamer has a very legit point: Obviously most manfacturers are chooing to adopt new SoC designs rather than just simply uping the clock speeds.Alex seriously the "educate yourself" thing? He was spreading misinformation, maybe that's something you dig, but I don't. Well, aside from the occasional really good trollpost. He was informing the world that the 4430 has the same old GPU that a Nexus S has had for ages. It's the same design, but it is clocked way faster and has a faster CPU and faster memory to back it up.That brings up another point. The 4430 IS a new SoC, relatively so. Just because parts of it are the same design as a previous chip, doesn't mean the SoC as a whole is an old design, and it doesn't mean it is inferior to existing competitors. Maybe Motorola went with the 4430 because it is better than Tegra 2 or equivalent Qualcomm chip when they were designing this phone. I'm sure they'll be replacing it yet again in their newer models in the next refresh.
Bottom line, he was incorrect, and you can defend it by attacking me for what you feel is "nerd rage", but Motorola and TI aren't QUITE as stupid as he thinks they are. If you feel that my comments are filled with hate, I'm sorry. If you'd said disdain instead, I'd be more inclined to agree. I'll try to model myself after Saint Chaser next time. ;)

The SGX540 was also very ahead of times last year.SGX530/535 and Adreno 200 were much slower.
OMAP4 phones are very competitive with the higher clocked SGX540. They perform better than Tegra2 and Adreno 220 devices.
