I tend to use CrystalDisk to adjust the over zealous power saving on HDDs I use. Back in the day when WD Greens were the drive to use in NAS (before Reds appeared) I used to adjust the power settings to halfway between max saving and minimum to reduce issues.

I can wipe all your data with a push of a button? Cool
What happens to your data when the power brick gets flaky?
What happens to your data when the power jack gets flaky?
Intermittent brownout?
Internal power supply with power loss protection might be a better option or
Or, if you must live dangerously with "YOUR" data, maybe stick with 2.5" drives without the external power supply?
Thunderbolt, ever heard of it?
Fake News Troll says...... I cannot recommend this product!
Sucks there's no option of USB-C bus power, perhaps when using 2.5" drives like 4TB laptop HDD's or SSD's. There is a market (for me at least) to have dual 2.5" enclosures running on bus power.
So, they copy the Cooler Master logo... close enough anyway, and as far as I know, they are not affiliated or part of Cooler Master... Isn't this something that the company could be sued for...
True, considering the 600 MBps as SSD RAID0 sequential file transfer only, which is hardly a common use scenario. For most other uses, as you have marvelously illustrated indeed, its performance hardly exceeds the 100MB/s DS214j's speed. This is why I believe that these two products can, in many was, compare. And an entry-level NAS can win.
Only if you transfer one large file. It's quite different if you copy many small files (which is the usual scenario). Your NAS won't be able to keep the high transfer rate and drop to a fraction of the possible gigabit LAN speed. It's getting worse if you use an encryption. On the other hand, the DAS is only restricted by the CPU of the much more powerful PC.
I just want a box like this without any additional raid sh*t, just a simple HDD/SSD aluminium enclosure + USB 3.0-3.1g2 adapter and the power brick/optional to run on usb 3.1 alone.
So there's a button on the back of this enclosure which, if you press it for five seconds, will reformat the hard drives as a new RAID volume? Why does that sound like a terrible idea?

Timely! Been looking at getting one of these for a simple but speedy data dump.Gothmoth - Wednesday, July 5, 2017 - link
i have it for a few month now and it´s great fro teh price.thought there is one issue.
they go to sleep to fast (after ~10 minutes).
there is a FW update now that they never go to sleep.. not perfect either.
but mine is only on when i backup to the two 6GB drives i put in... so no problem for me.

Sounds like a pretty cool unit, glad to hear from an actual user. Nice to know they actually updated the firmware too!Bullwinkle J Moose - Wednesday, July 5, 2017 - link

The reset button is recessed and needs a pin to keep it pressed. I am pretty sure no one will trigger it accidentally. All the other aspects you have highlighted are risks with other similar products also.

$159 for this piece of crap? With a few bucks more you can get an outstanding Synology DS216j, way better than this garbage can in a thousand ways.ganeshts - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link
You are comparing apples and oranges. Show me the case where the DS216j can sustain 600 MBps to your PC. This is a DAS, while the 216j is a NAS.jabber - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link
Indeed, sometimes you just want a place where you can dump and use a large amount of data fast. A Synology or any NAS isn't going to do that.menthol1979 - Thursday, July 6, 2017 - link

Benchmarks of the same drives on motherboard ports would be useful as a baseline, IMO.
