I'm pretty fond of the fractal design matx cases. Sound insulation on the panels, can handle large/low rpm fans, and overall a quality design. Anyone know of a similar smaller case that can handle the new gtx 1050 or 1060 in it's low profile or short cards that are becoming available?
I'm not sure why the companies behind the 1050 half height cards have been so cagey about the bracket this time; but according to customer Q&A on newegg the MSI cards that launched a month ago do include the short bracket in the box.
I'm not certain there will ever be a 1050 with a single slot cooler. That may belong in the domain of a hypothetical 1040 or lower end GPU, but I'm highly skeptical there will be a GPU released soon that is in a lower performance and power category than the 1050. The argument there is that Intel's eDRAM iGPUs begin to compete with such a graphics card. I think that argument stands on somewhat iffy ground because of the lack of eDRAM equipped processors, but then there's also AMD's integrated solutions as well and those are more readily available.
There's a single slot 1070 from Galax; and while a 150W single slot card is kinda crazy, there've been a steady trickle of single slot cards in the 60-75W range. Half height single slot OTOH is probably going to have to wait for GP108 since that's normally a 30-40W slot.
Also, the GeForce 9800 GT, the last top-model card I recall that was a single slot card, has a TDP at 125W. While that falls below the 1070's 150W it's not that far off. Certainly 75W for the 1050 would be do-able as a single slot design.
Where has the search box gone?! I was going to search Anandtech to see if there's been a GTX1050 review (I can't remember), but it seems the search function is MIA.
It's a 75W part. You're not going to get a passive card out of it. You'll need to wait for nVidia to get around to releasing the lower power GP108 first.
WHY do they have that DVI port? It's such an old, obsolete connector, and you could just include a displayport--->DVI cable, and give us a single slot card!
And yes, I know the heatsink is dual slot, but the single slot bracket/dual slot cooler would fit in a lot of machines, such as the older BTX optiplex machines these cards are often put in, as well as modded in win chopin style cases, or modded BP655 chassis. The DVI port makes all that impossible.
Of course, this wouldnt be an issue if more low profile cases had two expansion slots.
Because only DP to singlelink DVI can be done with a cheap passive dongle (that basically just tells the GPU to output DVI/HDMI on this port not DP). DP-duallink DVI (needed for older 1440/1600p displays) needs an active adapter that has a microcontroller/fpga/asic capable of doing protocol translation (DP doesn't have enough wires to carry all the data lines in dual link DVI, so the simpler option isn't available here). With the exception of a single $30ish adapter with horrible Newegg reviews, the ballpark cost for something capable of doing this is $100ish.
OTOH having finally delivered on retiring analog VGA out last summer (a few years after they originally agreed to); GPU makers might follow through on retiring DVI in the next few years too. IIRC the original timelines were 2013 to pull the plug on VGA and 2015 for DVI; with only Intel more or less hitting the original dates.
... that said I wouldn't be surprised if DVI does linger significantly longer due to the cost of the DP to DL-DVI converter being so much higher than an HDMI/DP to VGA one.
Well, maybe they could leave DVI port on, but make it optional by attaching it to card via pins on PCB and DVI connector on ribbon cable like MSI did with VGA connector on their low profile 750 Ti, but maybe there is a reason why they couldn't do it.
I would double check the specs on these cards. MSI said their card is HDMI 2.0, not 2.0a or 2.0b, but the specs listed here say 2.0b. They also told me there will not be a firmware update of any kind to make it 2.0 a or b. I'm using this for a HTPC so I'll end up with a DisplayPort to HDMI converter but keep that in mind if you were looking to plug your new 4k HDR TV directly into via HDMI.
There are LP machines that have room for a double-wide GPU. I have an older motheerboard with the pcie slot and the 1x slot reversed so that the1x is underneath the GPU's fan. I also have a HP6305 that has 4 back-panel covers. Next to the double-wide slot is another 16x slot that can accommodate a single-wide GPU. Unfortunately 75w + ??w exceeds the 75w limitation.

Needs to be single slot to fit in my case. :(Or have it like my passive 6570 where the heatsink is on the front and back of the card.

Do these come with low profile brackets for mounting in something like a 2u as well?DanNeely - Wednesday, January 11, 2017 - link

When are they going to release a single slot card again? I have no double-wide slots left in my computer.BrokenCrayons - Wednesday, January 11, 2017 - link

It might be possible binned and/or downclocked. There were passive versions of the R7 250, which pulled almost as much power.TheinsanegamerN - Wednesday, January 11, 2017 - link

Probably, considering the bugs that DP introduces into the mix. It's not time to get rid of older standards yet.vithrell - Friday, January 20, 2017 - link
