Weekly CPU & Video Card Price Guide: June 2001 1st Edition

This week AMD blesses us with yet another Athlon-C processors - the 1.4GHz part. Although it has a relatively cheap introductory price of $234, it is quite expensive compared to other Athlon-C processors. Expect the price of this part to drop soon once it is officially announced by AMD. The 1.33GHz Athlon saw a $13 price reduction. The rest of the Athlon-C line remained relatively unchanged this week. We should note that the new Athlon-C processors require a motherboard capable or handling the 266MHz FSB. The Athlon-B line of processors did not see much change this week. The 1.3GHz processor fell $9 putting it at $160. The 1.0GHz part fell slightly to $122. Although these faster Athlons have come down significantly in price, we still recommend the 1.0GHz part as is offers similar performance to it's brothers at a lower price and also generates less heat.

The Slot A Athlons again saw almost no change in price this week. The 700MHz Thunderbird chip fell $3 putting it at $49. Those looking to upgrade an older Athlon system need only upgrade their motherboard's BIOS is order to support these higher clocked processors.

Just as Intel is cutting prices on their Celeron line or processors, AMD is expected to announce similar price reductions. Like the rest of AMD's line of processors, the Duron line saw very little change this week. The 850MHz part fell $2, putting it at $53. Those looking for an overclocking solutions should look at the 750MHz part which is now only $32.
